Attila Varga Early Career Award

The Attila Varga Early Career Award of GeoInno

Being an outstanding person and an exceptional scholar, Attila Varga (1958–2023) was not only a pioneer in spatial knowledge spillovers and regional economic modelling. He was a beloved mentor and a friend of many Hungarian economic geographers and one of the initiators of the Geography of Innovation community.

The Attila Varga Early Career Award was established in 2024, at the 7th Geography of Innovation Conference, in Manchester with the aim to commemorate Attila’s indisputable contribution to research and talent support and to recognize outstanding achievements of Early Career researchers.

The recipient of the Attila Varga Early Career Award in 2024 was Gabriele Piazza (London School of Economics) with his paper “Where the God Particle Touches the Ground: The Local Impact of Research Infrastructure Procurement in Italy”.

We feel honoured that the GeoInno community has decided to name its Early Career prize after Attila. We will remember Attila with deep gratitude for his tremendous contribution and support to the Hungarian community of regional scientists and economic geographers.
